11th Annual Young Authors' Tea

SUNDAY, Nov. 19

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

This year participants, grades 3 and 4, are asked to write a poem or a real or imagined story based on
Noah's Ark.
Along came the animals, two by two
The ox, the elephant and kangaroo….
And don't forget the dove, carrying the news of the end of the flood.

Imagine that you were on that ark. Write a story, poem or journal entry.

  • Imagine being your favourite animal. What is it like on board?
  • What if you were Noah? What would you think when God tapped you on the shoulder and told you the flood was coming?
  • Imagine you're one of the people. You're on the ship day after day… And enough already with hauling hay!
  • Finally! You set foot on land. What's that like?
  • What do you think the story of Noah's Ark is meant to tell us?

All submissions will be printed and all the students who attend the Tea will be coached on presentation and public speaking skills. There will be a draw for door prizes and, if necessary, for the names of those young authors who will read aloud. Only those who arrive on time and sign in will be eligible for the draw.

The 11th Annual Young Authors' Tea book should be ordered prior to the Tea as only limited numbers will be available for sale that day. If your child has not brought a form home from school, ask for entry and order forms from the JCCGV reception. Deadline for submissions and advance book orders is Monday, November 6 at 5 pm.

Friends and family of the young authors are encouraged to attend. The reading and tea are open to the general public. Young authors gather at 1:00 pm sharp.
Audience members are welcome to pick up their pre-ordered Young Authors' Tea books or browse in the book festival bookstore. The structured presentation will begin at 1:30 pm.

Admission is free. Everyone is welcome.
Location: Wosk Auditorium

Guest Author and Illustrator

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

ELLEN SCHWARTZ launched three new books in 2006, Stealing Home (Tundra Books), Yossi's Goal (Orca Books) and Abby's Birds (Tradewind Books) illustrated by Sima Elizabeth Shefrin. Ellen will read excerpts from her new books and discuss their origins and the writing process. Yossi's Goal tells the story of Yossi, a Jewish immigrant boy in Montreal who longs to play hockey. When his father becomes ill and cannot work, all Yossi's hard earned savings must go to help the family, not to buy skates. Stealing Home is a can't-put-it-down story of racial tension, baseball, and everyone's hero, Jackie Robinson. Abby's Birds is a charming story of an improbable friendship between a little girl and her elderly Japanese neighbour. Ellen is the author of twelve books for young readers. She is working on the fifth book in her Starshine series and planning a culinary mystery with her daughter who is a pastry chef. Ellen Schwartz lives in Burnaby, BC.

SIMA ELIZABETH SHEFRIN will lead an interactive illustration activity based on Abby's Birds, the book she illustrated. Sima Elizabeth works extensively in community arts, and is the artist co-ordinator of the Middle East Peace Quilt, the Kerrisdale Community Centre Welcoming Quilts, and The Art of Living Together, a multicultural project, which helped to build bridges between the Jewish community and other cultures in Vancouver.

Admission is free. Everyone is welcome.
Location: Wosk Auditorium

The Young Authors' Tea is presented with support from the CanWest Raise a Reader.
