The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver proudly presents

The 15th Annual JCC Sports Dinner
February 18, 2008

Jack Diamond’s Legacy (1909-2001)

Jack Diamond

JACK DIAMOND was a leader in business, a devoted family man, an inspiring community citizen, and to the world of sports the father of modern-day horse racing in British Columbia. Always full of his trademark energy, Mr. Diamond had been up-front fixture of these dinners. Space doesn’t permit us to tell the complete story of his great life, but here are some highlights.

A leading member of the city’s Jewish community, Jack was a philanthropist, and distinguished himself with several gifts to Simon Fraser University, and a donation of land to the BC Cancer Agency. He was a co-founder of Vancouver’s Variety Club and the BC Heart Foundation, a Chancellor of SFU, a Freeman of the City, and honorary Doctor of Laws, and a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Ron Toigo The Jack Diamond Award recognizes an individual who has consistently demonstrated a competitive and cooperative spirit, who has excelled in the fields of sport, and who has made a positive contribution to our community. We are thrilled to announce that MR. RON TOIGO has been selected as this year’s recipient. Ron’s background as a hockey man dates back to the 90’s when he owned and operated the Tri-City Americans Hockey Club & Coliseum which he sold in 2000 and acquired an expansion team for Vancouver with Pat Quinn and Gordie Howe. Currently he is the President and Majority Owner of the major junior hockey club, The Vancouver Giants. Serving in the capacity of Tournament Chair, Ron was the driving force behind the most successful World Junior Tournament in the history of the event which was hosted in British Columbia in December, 2006. Ron’s passion for premier hockey events continues as in May 2007 the Vancouver Giants Jr. Hockey Club hosted the 2007 Memorial Cup, the Major Junior Hockey’s prized championship for the first time in over 30 years in Vancouver, British Columbia. To make the championship a more memorable one, the Vancouver Giants were the champions of the 2007 Memorial Cup. Ron is also currently a Director of the Delta Police Board Foundation and a member of the fund-raising committee for the Vancouver Children’s Hospital.
